FreeStyle Libre 2 and 3 Sensors to Be Discontinued — Transition to PLUS

Abbott has announced that starting in September 2025, it will discontinue the FreeStyle Libre 2 and FreeStyle Libre 3 sensors. In their place, Abbott is rolling out the next generation of continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) technology: FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus and FreeStyle Libre 3 Plus sensors.
What This Means for Patients and Providers
If you or your patients currently use the FreeStyle Libre 2 or Libre 3 systems, you will need to transition to the new “Plus” versions to continue uninterrupted CGM coverage.
The FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus and Libre 3 Plus sensors are designed to work seamlessly with evolving insulin delivery technologies and digital health platforms. Most notably, these new sensors are designed for integration with automated insulin delivery (AID) systems, like the Tandem t:slim X2 insulin pump, offering even greater personalization and control.

- Same trusted accuracy you’ve come to rely on
- Longer sensor wear (up to 15 days for some versions)
- Expanded device compatibility with insulin pumps and digital apps
- FDA-cleared for integration with AID systems
Transitioning to Libre 2 Plus or Libre 3 Plus
Abbott is recommending that all users be transitioned to the Libre Plus sensors before the current versions are phased out in September. This transition may require:
- A new prescription from your healthcare provider
- Updated device or app settings
- Consultation with your clinic or diabetes care team
